on project 3 and epic cross-country trips

http://www.ATLtoNYC.com kicks off tomorrow late afternoon! Today we mostly talked about trip details and questions, etc.
I’m pretty excited! I just looked up some information on Crush +  Lovely, our first studio tour on Wednesday, and the store Future Perfect. Crush + Lovely, formerly Boom Design Group, does interwebz work which should be really fun – their studio looks pretty chill. And they like dancing, and I like dancing so that seems like a fun pairing 🙂
The Future Perfect store will probably make me cringe with joy because of all the lovely, unique things inside of it that I have no chance in hell of ever being able to purchase until I am 50 and live in a house.

Project 3 is a group project focusing on workspaces; my group is attempting to do observational research at banks but I feel like that’s dangerous ? So we may have to re-focus. We have a lot of research time to put in, but we’re going to be gone to NYC. So hey, NYC banks! Fun! From what I remember about the beginning brief of this project is that we’ll be spending more time actually creating full-scale things, which should be very awesome.

I think I’m a smidgen jet-lagged from being in Italy all week, SO sleeping on the Comfortivity bus should be an interesting experience, too. What makes me most excited about this trip is how well our studio gets along! Or gets along now, before a lot of time being confined to small spaces together. I know this trip will be fantastic, I just wish I had an extra day to clean up around my apartment and settle on my couch before I pick up and leave again, but alas, such is my life [joke. I am totally stoked to be able to go to Italy, NYC, and New Orleans all in one year (would have been better spaced out over three months, instead of all in one, but how can I truly complain?!)!!]

Spring is here, everyone is moving and shaking and the grass is green again. Seems a lot of people are doing a lot of changing and migrating right now; hope we all stay safe and happy as the end of this school year comes to a close, and I come *thatmuch* closer to my senior year of studio.

and it all came tumbling out.

Now that I have been away from that godforsaken computer lab in 104 for a few days, and have already started our final project for the semester I am feeling a little less completely consumed by bitter rage as I previously felt [circa Friday’s review around 2pm]. I have even gone back to liking packaging, and have even found a stellar site that is all about it The Dieline [thanks to following FFFFOUND! on tumblr that posted some stuff from thedieline.com – isn’t the internet a funny little thing (or rather, never-endingly-huge)?]
I am proud of what I accomplished for the third project in theory and in graphics – which I was actually done with Wednesday night. I am not proud of the “end result” I produced for Friday’s review. I just couldn’t get things together, and it seems as if everything that could go wrong did, of course, go terribly wrong. I think that if every project this semester had gone so generally smoothly as they had been going, that perhaps the karma backlash I would’ve experienced would have been much more devastating than the one that I did have. I was burnt out and angry over being in that stupid, small computer room for so many days in a row with what seemed like nothing to show for it – but, of course, as a simple third year student I had simply forgotten that all projects are for the greater good of THE PORTFOLIO and not necessarily ‘the review.’ Days, MANY extra hours of sleep and some good meals of chips&dip and/or nachos [to ease the ‘WTF STUDIO SUCKED’ pains] later, I am back to being a happy little studio worker and am looking forward to this new project.

Project Four is a serious group project about non-motorized transportation. I’m working with Allison, one of my loverly former roommates, and Chris, a boy that can sketch like nobody’s business, on wheel-related transportation. I’m not usually a group project person, but thus far, I’m very happy with my group and I know that they’re both fantastic designers/hard workers. Looking forward to what this project has in store.

just a little bit more

I’m really digging the idea of making some “customization” kits as my promotional item for this third project. Right now I’m playing around with the idea of ‘live in your shoes’ or something like that; I really need to get some catchy zingers worked out for my kits to be super successful. Thus far I’ve tinkered with the idea of dirt/mud, tire treads, grass stains, paint, soy sauce, and make-up (?).

It has to be funny, and it has to be right so I still have a lot to think about.
